American National Security Panel Sumo Acquisition Survey
It seems that everything does not happen well for Tencent for their major agreement. Despite the purchase of the developer of the game Sackboy: A Little Big Adventure, Sumo now reports that the sale must now be approved by the Foreign Investment Committee in the United States (also known as CFIUS) before it can be finalized. Tencent agreed to work with Sumo to obtain the approval of the CFIUS.
The reason the $ 1.27 billion agreement, which would add many games to the already vast game library of Tencent, has become a red flag for the CFIUS in the first place is due to the property by Sumo de Studios Inside the US borders, including Pipeworks Studios. The committee, which existed since the Donald Trump era, investigates trade agreements between Chinese and US companies on the basis of potential threats to national security, namely American security. There have been acquisitions of companies that have been abandoned because of the difficulty of obtaining the approval of the CFIUS. But it is unlikely that Tencent abandons this lucrative agreement so quickly. Not only is Tencent is already on the territory of big business, with a market value of about $ 1 trillion, but Tencent is already negotiating with the US committee on other commercial transactions it has. Namely, Tencent keeps his participations in Epic Games and Riot Games, because the flag was hoisted, always in the name of American national security.
Tencent is known for having invested in many projects over the years, without limiting in Call of Duty: Mobile, Fortnite and League of Legends, while venturing into e-commerce and social media. Not to mention that this is the second group of video games, after Sony in July. It is not surprising that Sumo in particular hopes that the acquisition will be validated by the end of the year. And it may be possible with the support of Tencent.
